World Backup Day: EMEA CXOs plan to leverage cloud-based backup by 2023

by

On World Backup Day 2021, research published in the Veeam Data Protection Report 2021 has found that the majority of EMEA businesses plan to leverage cloud services as their primary method for data protection by 2023. This trend reflects CXOs recognition of the need to modernise their data protection capabilities, improving the reliability and efficiency of backups, while reducing complexity and cost.

veeam 202177% of CXOs across EMEA said that their organization will use cloud services to deliver backup in the next two years. Not only are organizations turning to the cloud as their primary method of data protection, but they also plan to change the way they consume backup services. 44% plan to leverage cloud-based backup, managed by a Backup as a Service (BaaS) provider. Doing so enables businesses to truly modernise their data protection, removing the costly nature of Capex investments and time-intensive, less accurate manual processes.

There are a number of drivers for this. The Veeam Data Protection Report 2021 found that data protection is holding back Digital Transformation (DX), with 29% of EMEA businesses slowing or halting their DX initiatives in the past 12 months. Inadequate backup processes are a huge contributor – with businesses reporting that 58% of all data is potentially unprotected, globally. Businesses realise that self-managed backup using only on-premises tools is leaving their businesses’ data vulnerable and undermining their DX initiatives.

When it comes to what CXOs say their business needs from its primary backup solution, it’s about improving reliability, reducing risk, and driving efficiency. Improving the success rates of backups is the most important consideration for businesses looking to changing their primary backup solution. Other drivers included increasing return on investment (ROI), reducing software and hardware costs, and improving recovery point objective (RPO) or recovery time objective (RTO) SLAs.

“Organizations across EMEA are aware that overreliance on legacy IT systems and data protection solutions poses an immediate threat to their ongoing digital transformation, which is why CXOs are planning to increase their use of cloud-based backup and Backup as a Service,” said Dan Popa, Senior Territory Manager Romania, Bulgaria & Albania la Veeam Software, Veeam. “Moving to subscription-based data protection services enables organizations to take advantage of more cost-effective solutions with the flexibility to pay only for the services they use. This also ensures that processes such as software updates, patching and testing are automated as opposed to relying on manual protocols.”
